Beginners

Once again, all levels of Aikido and/or other martial arts are welcome. Or, if this is your first time learning a martial art, by all means attend a session!

Indeed, you may attend a session as simply an observer, though Sensei may encourage you to participate ( Fill out the Participation Agreement form found at  recreation.rice.edu/clubsports/forms/ before attending.)

What will you be learning?

  • A very effective means of self defense that does not depend on your size, weight, or strength for effectiveness
  • To take falls (at higher levels, these can look quite spectacular!)
  • A way to neutralize an attacker without injury to him/her or yourself

Some things to keep in mind if this is your first time attending:

  • You WILL be in contact with the mat, so wear loose, comfortable clothing that covers your elbows and knees
  • Please remove your wallet, keys, jewelry and the like to avoid puncturing the mat or yourself.
  • Please tie back loose hair.
  • Trim finger/toe nails. If these get caught, it hurts…a lot.
  • Aikido training is done barefoot, so please remove your shoes before entering the mat.
  • There is a specific kind of etiquette involved with Aikido training, just as with other martial arts. You will be given a run-down on proper etiquette when you arrive.
  • If you have any particular needs that require consideration, such as an injury, please let Sensei know BEFORE you begin training.
  • Our club does have dues of $10 per semester. This will go to gi (uniform) purchases and test fees.
  • At some point, it is recommended that you purchase a gi. These are about $30 when you purchase through the club (we get a discounted price through HSU Martial Arts).
  • If you decide to become a member of club, you must fill out a Club Sports Participation Agreement
