Welcome
Aikido is a relatively new martial art developed between 1920 to 1930 by Morihei Ueshiba, who is known by practitioners of Aikido as O Sensei, or “great teacher.” The name Aikido itself means the “the way of harmony” or “the way of peace.” This is an accurate description of Aikido, as Aikidoka are trained not to attack, but rather to blend with the energy of an attacker to immobilize/throw him/her in order to neutralize the attack without serious or lethal injury to either party. Practically, Aikido is almost completely self-defense only. Since Aikido is a very non-aggressive martial art, it has been called “the gentleman’s martial art.”
The Rice Aikido Club is associated with AAA (Aikido Association of America) which was founded by Fumio Toyoda Shihan, who studied with Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba, O Sensei’s son. AAA has since reassociated with Aikikai International and Hombu Dojo (the home of the art) in Japan.
Testing occurs roughly once per semester at the discretion of the instructor, though it is not stressed.
All experience levels completely welcome. If you are thinking of joining the club, please feel free to attend a practice session; you may watch or even practice with us if you wish.
